Chapter 128 Lurking
Chapter 128 Lurking
The Marshal's Mansion gradually returned to calm at night, but the air still held the solemn atmosphere of the battle. Cheng Yuwei stood in the corridor, gazing at the starlit courtyard, but her heart was restless. She recalled the assassin's actions, her brow furrowed in thought, and she felt an indescribable unease.
Ling Xiaotian walked behind her and gently put his arm around her shoulders: "What are you thinking about?"
Cheng Yuwei raised her head, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes: "Although we thwarted the assassination this time, I always feel that things are not that simple. Is there a bigger conspiracy behind the White Tiger Gang?"
Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Your intuition has always been sharp. This action reveals their anxiety, which may indicate that they have reasons to take risks."
As the two were talking, Zhou Hao hurried over, his face solemn. "Marshal, Madam, we have new intelligence. One of the assassins has confessed that the White Tiger Gang's true goal isn't just to kill you or incite civil unrest. They're also trying to control the city's water supply through an insider."
"Water source?" Cheng Yuwei exclaimed, immediately understanding the seriousness of the situation. Controlling the water source was equivalent to controlling the lives of the entire city's residents. Such a conspiracy was more terrifying than a simple assassination.
Ling Xiaotian frowned, and after a moment's thought, he said, "This matter cannot be taken lightly. We must immediately strengthen the protection of the water source, and at the same time send people to secretly investigate to see who is the accomplice."
Zhou Hao nodded: "I have sent several teams to monitor suspicious personnel, but this will take time."
Cheng Yuwei looked at them and suddenly thought of something: "Xiaotian, maybe I can help. My knowledge of chemistry can help detect whether the water source has been poisoned or contaminated in other ways."
Ling Xiaotian looked at her, with complex emotions flashing in his eyes: "Wei'er, this is very dangerous, do you understand?"
She smiled slightly, her eyes firm: "I know, but this city is where we are all protecting. I can't just stand by and watch."
Ling Xiaotian sighed and gently stroked her face: "Okay, let's face this crisis together."
A few days later, Cheng Yuwei, armed with simple testing tools and escorted by the military, headed for the water source on the outskirts of the city. She carefully examined the water quality and found no obvious problems. Just as she was about to conduct further testing, a subtle sound emanated from the woods.
"Who!" The escorting soldiers quickly formed a circle and stared at the direction of the sound.
A man dressed in black slowly emerged from the shadows of the trees, a sneer on his face. "Miss Cheng, you are truly remarkable, coming here in person. It seems you are destined to rest here forever today."
Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat quickened, but she didn't panic. Instead, she said calmly, "Who are you? A lackey of the White Tiger Gang?"
The man in black didn't answer. With a wave of his hand, several assassins who had been lying in ambush rushed out. Seeing that a fierce battle was inevitable, Cheng Yuwei gritted her teeth and secretly vowed to guard this crucial water source at all costs.
Just as the two sides were on the verge of a fight, a crisp gunshot pierced the night sky. The man in black's hand trembled, and blood splattered from his shoulder. Ling Xiaotian arrived just in time with his elite troops. His eyes were as cold as ice, and his words were filled with murderous intent: "Anyone who dares to hurt her will be killed."
The man in black's expression changed. He glanced at Cheng Yuwei unwillingly, then turned and tried to flee. However, Ling Xiaotian quickly approached and stopped him with a single strike. The battle was over in just a few minutes, and the assassins were either defeated or captured alive.
Ling Xiaotian walked over to Cheng Yuwei, hugged her tightly, and whispered, "Fortunately, I arrived in time."
Cheng Yuwei leaned in his arms, feeling his heartbeat, and the fear and tension in her heart gradually subsided. She replied softly: "I knew you would come."
However, in the darkness, a pair of eyes were staring at them from afar, with the corners of their mouths slightly raised, as if they were regretting the failure and preparing for the next action.
