Years turn into wind

Chapter 116: Uneasy Omen

Chapter 116: Uneasy Omen

Cheng Yuwei carefully took the information revealed by the informant into her mind, her expression growing increasingly serious. She knew that this was not only a conspiracy against Ling Xiaotian, but also a plot to split the entire Marshal's Mansion. She had to let Ling Xiaotian know this information as soon as possible so that she could take countermeasures.

In the early morning, sunlight filtered through the mist into the study. Ling Xiaotian stood by the window, his eyes reflecting the golden morning light, his brow thick with contemplation. Last night's surprise attack had made him realize that the enemy's tactics were more ruthless than he had imagined. Just as he was lost in thought, brisk footsteps sounded outside the door.

"Xiaotian." Cheng Yuwei pushed the door open and walked in, with an anxious look in her eyes.

"Wei'er, why don't you rest for a while?" Ling Xiaotian frowned, and when he saw the worry on her face, his expression immediately became serious.

Cheng Yuwei walked up to him and repeated the informant's words verbatim. After Ling Xiaotian finished listening, the light in his eyes became sharper and he clenched his fists.

"They actually want to create conflict between us," Ling Xiaotian sneered, "Duan Yuxuan is indeed cunning."

Cheng Yuwei nodded, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes: "This also means that Liu Meiqiu will act again, or her accomplices will sneak into the Marshal's Mansion. We must be prepared."

Ling Xiaotian walked up to her and gently held her hand. "I will deploy more secret guards to ensure that the mansion is impervious to attack. But Wei'er, you must also be careful. They may very well target you."

Cheng Yuwei smiled slightly, with a firm look in her eyes: "I won't let them succeed easily."

Over the next few days, patrols and surveillance were intensified inside and outside the Marshal's Mansion, and the guards were on high alert. However, Cheng Yuwei felt a vague sense of unease, like the calm before the storm.

One evening, Ling Xiaotian had just returned from a meeting and found the light in the study still on. He pushed the door open and saw Cheng Yuwei at her desk, flipping through an ancient document, her brow furrowed. Noticing his approach, she looked up and smiled, "You're back."

Ling Xiaotian walked gently behind her and rubbed her shoulders: "What are you looking at?"

Cheng Yuwei pointed to a mark in the document and said, "This is the clue I found about that hidden organization. They seem to have originated from a secret society called the 'Ink Shadow Society' over a hundred years ago. Their goal is not just to sell intelligence, but also to subvert the regime and secretly manipulate it."

After hearing this, Ling Xiaotian's eyes flashed with surprise: "It seems we need more allies. It's probably difficult for the two of us to deal with such an enemy alone."

The two exchanged glances. Cheng Yuwei's hand was held tightly by his. Although she was filled with worry, the warmth at the moment comforted her. Ling Xiaotian whispered, "No matter how big the storm, we will face it together."

Late at night, the moonlight shone like silver, casting a shadow over the eaves of the Grand Marshal's Mansion, making it seem exceptionally quiet. Cheng Yuwei lay in bed, her eyes fixed on the darkness outside the window, unable to fall asleep. She felt as if an invisible force was watching them, like a pair of dark eyes, coldly staring at everyone in the mansion.

Suddenly, there was a slight movement in the courtyard. She sat up abruptly, put on her coat, and walked to the window. Ling Xiaotian was also awakened by her movement and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong?"

"There's a noise outside." Cheng Yuwei frowned and motioned for him to be quiet. The two held their breath and listened intently. Sure enough, the faint sound of footsteps could be heard from the shadows of the trees not far away.

A cold light flashed in Ling Xiaotian's eyes. He immediately stood up, grabbed his sword, and said, "You stay in the room. I'll go take a look."

Cheng Yuwei held his hand tightly, her eyes firm: "I'll go with you."

The two quickly arrived in the courtyard. The sentries, already aware of something unusual, gathered around them. For a moment, the entire courtyard was filled with an atmosphere of alert. At that moment, a dark figure leaped from the rooftop, its form as ethereal as a ghost, a short blade in hand, pointed directly at Ling Xiaotian.

"Protect the Marshal!" the guards shouted, drawing their swords and charging at the shadowy figure. However, the shadowy figure was agile, easily navigating the attacks. Ling Xiaotian snorted coldly and swung his sword to meet the attack. The two engaged in an instant, their swords flashing and shadows slicing through the moonlight, leaving streaks of cold light.

Cheng Yuwei stood aside, her heart pounding with nervousness. She could tell the newcomer was someone extraordinary, most likely a member of the Ink Shadow Society. Just then, another dark figure attacked from the flank. Cheng Yuwei instinctively stepped back, her eyes glancing at the dagger nearby, which she quickly picked up to meet the enemy.

Two shadowy masters battled Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei, the entire courtyard enveloped in the sounds of intense combat. Just as the two sides reached a stalemate, a sharp whistle rang out in the distance. The two shadowy figures immediately halted their attacks, their eyes flashing as they quickly leaped onto the rooftop, disappearing into the night.

Ling Xiaotian sheathed his sword and stood, looking coldly in the direction the shadow left, his eyes filled with vigilance and deep thought: "They are testing our defenses."

Cheng Yuwei slowly calmed her breathing, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes: "The 'Moying Society' is moving so quickly, it seems they can no longer hold back and are going to speed up their pace."

Ling Xiaotian walked up to her, stretched out his hands to hold her in his arms, and whispered: "They won't succeed. We will protect all of this."

A little suspense: Is the black shadow's attack just a prelude? What actions will the Mo Ying take next to continue threatening Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei?
