Chapter 106 Fragments of the Truth
Chapter 106 Fragments of the Truth
One day, while sorting Xie Linchuan's belongings, Ye Wan stumbled upon a letter hidden in his clothing. The letter was wrinkled, with a few lines of blurred handwriting, seemingly blurred by repeated folding. But one could still tell the sadness and guilt between the lines.
"I'm sorry... I owe you... There's no chance to make it up..."
These fragmented words made Ye Wan's heart tighten. She vaguely felt that the emotions revealed in this letter seemed to have touched a past that Xie Linchuan had difficulty letting go of. She closed the letter, looked up at him, and couldn't help but ask softly, "Who is this letter for?"
Xie Linchuan looked up and saw the letter. His face instantly darkened, his eyes cold as ice. He suddenly reached out and snatched the letter back, his movements filled with a bit of urgency and anger: "You shouldn't touch my things!"
His voice was cold and hard, his anger undisguised, as if the letter was a forbidden territory for him, untouchable by anyone. Ye Wan was startled, staring at his defensive gaze, feeling both guilty and bewildered. She hadn't expected the letter to provoke such a strong reaction from him, as if it had touched the most vulnerable corner of his heart.
She sighed softly and said gently, "I have no ill intentions. It's just... I just saw something and it seemed like there was something you couldn't let go of. Maybe I just wanted you to know that some pain doesn't need to be borne alone."
Xie Linchuan, however, did not appreciate it at all and refused coldly: "Ye Wan, there are some things you will never understand. I don't need your pity, nor do I need you to interfere in my past." His tone was cold and distant, as if he was deliberately keeping a distance.
Ye Wan felt a wave of loss upon hearing this, but she didn't flinch. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Then, she said calmly, "I'm not pitying you, nor do I want to get involved in your past. I just want to tell you that I understand this feeling. Loss... or unfulfilled promises, are both painful and difficult to let go."
Xie Linchuan glanced up at her, a subtle wavering look in his eyes. He seemed to have not expected Ye Wan to speak so openly about her pain, and his guard dropped slightly. Although he remained indifferent, there was less hostility in his eyes.
Silence stretched between the two. Xie Linchuan remained silent, his eyes lowered, his fingertips gently stroking the letter, as if reminiscing about something. His silence made Ye Wan vaguely feel that the letter might contain a heavy story, and that he himself was burdened with unresolved emotions.
She sat quietly beside him and said softly, "I know that everyone has a past that they don't want to touch upon. Sometimes not mentioning it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I won't force you to say anything, but if you are willing to share, I will listen."
Xie Linchuan's eyes relaxed slightly, and he whispered back, "Ye Wan, you may not understand, but some things are irreversible. That feeling of powerlessness will torment a person for a lifetime."
Ye Wan nodded slightly and said softly, "I'm not trying to understand everything you've been through, but I just think you shouldn't have to endure this pain alone. Even if I can't change anything, at least I can let you know that there are people who are willing to stand by you."
His fingers gently touched the letter paper, and after a moment, he spoke in a low voice: "What I owe her can never be repaid in my lifetime. Even if I try my best, even give it my all, it will be in vain." There was unconcealable self-blame and guilt in his voice, as if he was enduring an unforgivable past.
Ye Wan didn't ask any more questions, but just sat quietly by his side, giving him space to face it alone. She understood that some truths, no matter how cruel, must be faced and digested by the person involved personally, and all she could do was accompany him and silently support him.
After a long moment, Xie Linchuan raised his head, a soft look in his eyes. He whispered, "Perhaps... your kindness does make me feel a little relieved. However, these past events are too heavy for me to let go of, so how can I ask you to share them?"
Ye Wan smiled faintly, a hint of tenderness in her eyes: "I don't think sharing is a burden. People living in this world will always encounter some things that they can't face. And sometimes, a listener can make people feel better."
Xie Linchuan's eyes softened slightly upon hearing this. He suddenly realized that Ye Wan's persistence and kindness weren't out of pity, but genuine companionship. Although he still didn't want to reveal all of himself, her understanding quietly loosened his defenses, and even fostered a subtle sense of dependence.
Late at night, Xie Linchuan would occasionally look up at her, his eyes revealing a complex mix of emotions. His hostility towards Ye Wan was gradually replaced by understanding and tolerance during their time together, and at times, he even felt a sense of comfort from her presence.
Ye Wan gradually discovered that Xie Linchuan's indifference wasn't heartlessness, but a form of self-protection. He hid all his pain deep within his heart, wrapped in a thick shell to avoid being seen through. But she knew that beneath this layer of indifference, he was sensitive and fragile, perhaps with unhealed wounds.
Once, late at night, Ye Wan whispered, "I don't expect you to tell me everything, but I hope you know that you are not alone during this period."
Xie Linchuan didn't respond, but just lowered his eyes and listened silently. A hint of warmth rose in his heart, as if in this silent companionship, he finally felt a long-lost comfort.
Although they still maintain a certain distance from each other and have not completely broken down that layer of defense, a tacit trust has already been established in their hearts. They are no longer strangers who are wary of each other, but carry their own pasts and pains, finding a brief peace in this journey.
Xie Linchuan's eyes occasionally fell on the letter, his expression complex, as if he was struggling with whether to tell Ye Wan the truth about his past. But in the end, he remained silent, only a gentle light flashed in his eyes. He knew that Ye Wan's companionship gave him a kind of silent support. Even if she didn't necessarily understand his pain, she always stayed by his side with a gentle attitude.
Ye Wan gradually realized that some wounds can only be healed by time, and all she could do was to accompany him silently and give him unconditional kindness and understanding. Although the line of defense between the two still existed, this barrier had already loosened, and fragments of the truth quietly emerged in the darkness.
Their relationship grew delicate yet profound. In this abandoned warehouse, their companionship and understanding became their shared strength. Ye Wan felt a lingering feeling that perhaps one day, Xie Linchuan would completely open his heart and reveal his deepest secrets. However, she was in no rush to uncover the truth, knowing that the most precious thing between people wasn't discovery, but understanding and respect.
