Chapter 239: Top 3 Tournament (2)
Chapter 239: Top 3 Tournament (2)
"Over the centuries, attempts have been made to revive the Tournament," Dumbledore continued, "but none have been successful. However, we at the Ministry of Magic, the Department of International Magical Cooperation and the Department of Magical Games and Sports, have decided that the time is right for another attempt. Much has been done this summer to ensure that no champion's life is in danger."
"In October, the headmasters of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will lead their carefully selected competitors. The ceremony to select the champions will be held on Halloween. An impartial judge will decide which students are most qualified to compete for the Triwizard Cup, win honor for their own school, and each student will receive a prize of one thousand Galleons."
"I want to!" whispered Fred Weasley across the table, his face lighting up at the prospect of such honor and fortune.
And he's not the only one who fantasizes about becoming a Hogwarts Knight.
At every house table, someone was gazing wildly at Dumbledore or whispering excitedly to their neighbour.
But Lamia doesn't think so. If everyone can participate, there will be countless people participating in this competition.
Sure enough, what Dumbledore said next confirmed Lamia's guess.
"I know you all long to win the Triwizard Cup for Hogwarts," he said, "but the participating schools and the Ministry have agreed to impose an age limit on this year's competitors. Only students who are seventeen years of age or older – that is, seventeen and older – will be allowed to enter for consideration. We feel that..."
—Dumbledore raised his voice slightly, because some people protested angrily after hearing what he said, and the Weasley twins suddenly became furious—"This measure is very necessary, because the events of the Tournament are still very difficult and dangerous. No matter how many precautions we take, students below the sixth and seventh grades will not be able to cope with them at all.
I will personally ensure that no underage student deceives our impartial judges and becomes a Hogwarts champion." His blue eyes gleamed meaningfully as he glanced over Fred and George's rebellious faces. "Therefore, if you are under seventeen, I implore you not to waste your time applying."
"The Beauxbatons and Durmstrang delegations will arrive in October and spend most of the school year with us. I know that you will all be cordial and friendly to our foreign guests during their stay here, and that you will wholeheartedly support the Champion of Hogwarts once he or she is chosen.
Okay, it's getting late now, and it's very important for you to walk into class tomorrow morning refreshed and clear-headed. Go to bed! hurry up! "
Dumbledore sat down and turned to talk to Mad-Eye Moody.
The restaurant was filled with the sounds of clattering and ping-pong. Students stood up one after another, rushed to the two opposite doors, and entered the lobby.
"They can't do that!" said George Weasley, standing there glaring at Dumbledore instead of following the crowd toward the door. "We'll be seventeen next April. Why don't we give it a try?"
"They can't stop me from participating," Fred said stubbornly, glaring angrily at the guest of honor. "Being a warrior allows you to do many things that you're not normally allowed to do, and there's also a 1,000 Galleon bonus..."
"Yeah," said Ron, a dazed look on his face. "Yeah, a thousand Galleons..."
"Let's go," Hermione said, "Lamia, let's ignore them. If we don't leave, we'll be the only ones left here."
They began walking towards the entrance hall, and all the while Fred and George argued about what measures Dumbledore would take to prevent students under seventeen from taking part in the Tournament.
"Who will be the impartial judge of who is the champion?" asked Harry.
"I don't know," said Fred, "but he's the man we're trying to fool. I think a drop or two of the Age-Reducing Agent would do the trick, George..."
"But Dumbledore knows you're not old enough," said Ron.
"Yeah, but he doesn't get to decide who the champions are, does he?" said Fred shrewdly. "It sounds to me like the referee just knows who wants to take part and picks the best one from each school, regardless of their age. Dumbledore's trying to stop us signing up."
"But so many people died!" Hermione said in a worried tone, holding Lamia's hand tightly.
At this time, they passed through a door hidden behind the tapestry and walked up a narrower staircase.
Lamia patted Hermione soothingly, signaling her to relax, after all, her apparent age was not enough.
"Yeah," said Fred nonchalantly, "but that was years ago, wasn't it? And besides, what's the fun without a bit of adventure? Hey, Ron, if we can somehow trick Dumbledore, would you like to join in?"
"What do you think?" Ron asked Harry. "It would be great to join, wouldn't it? But I imagine they want someone a little older... I wonder if we'll learn enough..."
"It's definitely not enough. None of us are seventeen. But what about Lamia? I'm sure you can do it." Harry said, turning his head to look over.
"I'm not old enough either," Lamia said with a smile.
……
They came to the entrance to Gryffindor Tower above, which was hidden behind a huge portrait of a fat lady in a pink silk dress.
"Password?" the Fat Lady asked as they approached.
"Nonsense," George said, winking over his shoulder at Lamia. "A prefect downstairs told me."
The portrait suddenly sprang forward, revealing a gaping hole in the wall, through which they all climbed.
But when it was Lamia's turn, the Fat Lady's eyes widened in surprise; she had never seen a Slytherin invited into the Gryffindor Common Room.
The circular common room was filled with tables and slouchy armchairs, and a fire was crackling brightly.
Hermione glanced at the cheerfully dancing flames with a melancholy look, then said something to Lamia and walked towards the dormitory.
Lamia didn't plan to stay any longer. She originally wanted to talk to Hermione, but Hermione seemed to be in a bad mood. Her mind was full of those slave-like elves.
After watching Hermione disappear completely, Lamia walked outside. Hogwarts at night was very different from that during the day.
