Wu Tian noticed the expressions of the two maidservants and chuckled.
"You don’t need to overthink it. I just find the physiques of you sisters to be very special, nothing more."
Physiques? Hong Ji and Lan Niang exchanged a glance. What kind of physiques could they possibly have? They had no idea themselves.
"It’s a secret," Wu Tian said with a smile, then continued, "As the master of the Heavenless Gate, since you will be my wife’s maidservants from now on, you are naturally also disciples of my Heavenless Gate."
"Yes." Hong Ji and Lan Niang nodded. However, they had truly never heard of this Heavenless Gate. In all of Xiuyuan Country, the most powerful sect was the Heavenly Sword Sect.
"Please tell us, Master, is our Heavenless Gate a hidden sect?" Hong Ji speculated, her red lips moving as the words tumbled out. "On the surface, the Heavenly Sword Sect is the number one sect in Xiuyuan Country, but in reality, our Heavenless Gate is not beneath it—perhaps even above it—and has simply been hiding in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to conquer the world?"
Lan Niang nodded, feeling her sister’s theory was very reasonable.
"You... you’re overthinking things," Wu Tian chuckled.
Afterwards, the names Hong Ji and Lan Niang automatically appeared on the Investiture of the Gods. Then, the two of them went to tidy up the rooms. Although they appeared to be maidservants, Qin Yuhan didn’t treat them that way at all, but rather like little sisters.
Wu Tian sat in the backyard for a while. He figured that since Qin Yuhan and the little one had only been out for a short time before returning, they probably hadn’t had enough fun. With that in mind, Wu Tian decided to take Qin Yuhan, the little one, and the two maidservants out for another stroll. As natives of Xiuyuan Country, the two maidservants were certainly familiar with the area and could serve as "guides."
Although Wu Tian had stayed in Xiuyuan Country for a while during his first visit to the Immortal Emperor Realm, ten thousand years had passed. A great Star-Shifting had occurred, and the local culture and customs of Xiuyuan Country had changed dramatically. So, around noon, Wu Tian took Qin Yuhan and the others out to find a place to eat.
Duke Guang’s Mansion had cooks, but they weren’t specialists—they were just members of the Fire Head Army assigned to kitchen duty. The food they prepared was barely satisfactory.
At noon, the sun blazed outside, and waves of heat rolled through the air. Only in the shade of the trees could one find some slight relief. The streets were mostly empty. Just a short walk would leave one drenched in sweat, unless they possessed the advanced skill of circulating their Spiritual Power to regulate their body temperature. This ability had nothing to do with the density of one’s Spiritual Power; it was a matter of pure technique, and very few people knew it.
After walking along the street for a while, a building soon came into view. It was built over a lake filled with Ice Spirit Stones, a type of ice that never melted and continuously emitted a frosty air. They were expensive, but wealthy families could still afford them.
The plaque on this building read: "Food God Tavern - Branch!"
The Food God Tavern was the most widespread chain of taverns in the Immortal Emperor Realm, with branches in the royal city of nearly every country. Wu Tian considered for a moment before leading Qin Yuhan and the others inside.
"Isn’t that Wu Tian, the man who killed the Regent King?" The moment Wu Tian stepped inside, someone noticed him. The man approached and spoke in what was meant to be a low voice, but it came out booming, his tone deceptively polite. From a single glance at the man’s face, Wu Tian knew he was trouble.
The speaker was a portly man clad in official robes. With every step he took, the very ground seemed to tremble under his weight.
Who is this person? Wu Tian wondered.
Hong Ji leaned in and whispered in Wu Tian’s ear, "That’s Zhao Bin, the Minister of Revenue for Xiuyuan Country. He was personally promoted by the Regent King. He used to be a thin man, but within a year of becoming Minister of Revenue, he became fat. It’s a clear sign of how much he has lined his own pockets."
Wu Tian nodded. A department like the Ministry of Revenue was indeed the most profitable place to be. Lower-class countries like this one all had Six Ministries. Upper Countries and Divine Countries were structured differently.
Now that Zhao Bin, the Minister of Revenue, had lost his patron, the Regent King, his future in the royal court would surely be fraught with difficulty. How could he not be burning with resentment? He didn’t dare to oppose Wu Tian openly, but he would certainly try to trip him up. He appeared friendly on the surface, but secretly, he was hoping for Wu Tian to suffer a great humiliation.
"Get lost. I have no time to talk to you," Wu Tian said flatly, not bothering to waste another word on Zhao Bin.
"What?" Zhao Bin was stunned. He hadn’t expected Wu Tian to be so unapproachable, so utterly unreasonable. Having risen to the rank of Minister of Revenue, he certainly knew a few tricks of his own. He suddenly roared with laughter. "HAHAHA! Everyone, come and see! They say you rely on your parents at home and on your friends when you’re away. I just wanted to have a friendly chat with this gentleman here, and he flatly refused me..."
"That’s just wrong of him."
"Indeed. When you’re out and about, amiability brings wealth. You should always be agreeable."
"The road of life is a difficult one to walk! How can anyone get by without friends?"
"It’s a basic principle of life. Why doesn’t he understand it?"
Many of the patrons in the tavern often gathered to eat, drink, and pretend they understood the great affairs of the world, so their relationships were naturally close. Moreover, a few officials were present. Some were unorthodox disciples of the Royal Teacher, and others were men promoted by the Regent King. They naturally sided with Zhao Bin, the Minister of Revenue, and spoke up for him.
"You lot don’t have the guts to fight me, so it seems you want to play a game instead. Is that it? Fine, let’s play a game." Wu Tian glanced at the crowd. Their Martial Arts Cultivation was pitifully low—some hadn’t even reached Foundation Establishment. They were a bunch of utter good-for-nothings. He didn’t get angry but instead smiled calmly. "How about a bet?"
A bet? Zhao Bin and the others exchanged glances, unsure of what Wu Tian was planning.
"What, scared?" the little one in Qin Yuhan’s arms suddenly sensed that something fun was about to happen and immediately piped up.
Zhao Bin and the others looked at each other, their faces flushing with anger. They couldn’t stand being spoken to like that by a mere child.
"A bet? Why would we be scared to bet?"
"Fine, let’s do it!"
"A bet? Go on, what’s the wager? How could I possibly lose a bet against a friendless man like you?" Seeing that Wu Tian wasn’t going to resort to violence, Zhao Bin breathed a sigh of relief. He knew he was no match in a direct fight, but a bet... Now this could be interesting.
"Good. Since you dare to bet, then let’s wager on who has better connections!" Wu Tian chuckled and continued, "The loser... loses their head!"
His head? The words made Zhao Bin freeze with hesitation. If a man loses his head, how can he possibly live? A sliver of fear crept into his heart.
"What? Scared already?" Wu Tian laughed.
"Minister Zhao, take the bet!"
"That’s right! He only just showed up in Xiuyuan Country. What kind of connections could he possibly have?"
"The only person he knows is City Lord Guang!"
"Besides, who would dare to stand up and call themselves his friend? Aren’t they afraid that when the King comes out of seclusion, he’ll investigate the deaths of the Regent King and the Royal Teacher, and then exterminate all nine degrees of their kinship as punishment? This is a great bet! I want to take it too!"
"Exactly! Under these circumstances, who would admit to being his friend? You’re guaranteed to win, Minister Zhao! Bet with him! Go for his head! I’m tempted to bet with him myself!"
The whole tavern erupted in laughter.
Wu Tian smiled, his voice booming with heroic spirit. "Excellent! In that case, I alone will bet against all of you! If you lose, the heads of every single person here will be mine. Do you dare?"
