Chapter 302 - 300: Like a Different Person
Chapter 302 - 300: Like a Different Person
A flicker of light crossed Hayes Hughes’s eyes.
The old professor seemed to recall something and looked up. "She’s your cousin. That means you should know this ’Gu-something’ person she mentioned, right?"
"I don’t," Hayes Hughes said softly, setting down the medical file. "There’s no one by that name in the Grant Family."
"Then it’s probably just nonsense." The old professor wasn’t surprised. "Given her current state, I recommended hospitalization, but her parents refused. If you have time, you should try to persuade them as well."
"Is she still like this?"
"It’s hard to say. The patient suffers from mild confusion and a tendency toward delusions, making it difficult for her to distinguish between the external world and her own state. However, she is still aware of her own thoughts, they just lack coherence. Because she’s speaking nonsensically and her words are all jumbled, she’s naturally in a state of confusion. If her condition worsens, she’ll start spouting gibberish. If it’s milder, she’ll lean more toward fantasy."
After leaving the office, Hayes Hughes took out his phone, opened WeChat, and looked at his chat with Mia Grant.
[It’s Serena.]
Mia Grant replied quickly, asking for details.
[She’s had a mental breakdown. Recovering at home.]
On the other end, Mia Grant frowned when she saw the message.
’It’s actually true. Yikes... How did it get this bad?’
"Zero," she called him in. "It’s a mental breakdown. It really is Serena Grant."
"Ah." Zero wasn’t surprised. "That shouldn’t be a problem, right? It’s not life-threatening?"
"Hard to say. What if she hurts herself while she’s not lucid?" Mia Grant sighed. "Look at the mess you’ve made."
’What a headache. Why can’t anything go right lately? Sigh...’
Mia Grant sighed silently.
"Can you get someone to infiltrate the Grant Family?"
Zero tilted his head, quickly understanding what she meant. "We can plant a maid inside. That way, we can also protect Serena Grant up close."
"That’s a great idea!" Mia Grant smiled. "Do it."
"Remember, she cannot die before her twentieth birthday."
—
On the other end of the line, the man was silent for a moment before asking, "Why twenty?"
"I’m not sure," Zero replied. "Miss Grant didn’t say."
He then repeated Mia Grant’s words verbatim. "Word for word, that’s what Miss Grant said."
"I wanted to ask, too, but I got the feeling Miss Grant wouldn’t tell me."
"Do as she says. Keep a close watch on Serena Grant."
"Yes, Sir." Zero added, "I’ll try to ask Miss Grant again, subtly, later on."
"Don’t bother," Kian Keller’s voice was hoarse. "Let her be. Just do whatever she arranges. You don’t need to run it by me."
"Yes, Sir."
The call ended, and Aaron took his phone, placing it aside.
Aaron was supposed to stay in the country, but Mia Grant had said she didn’t like him and told him to go with Kian Keller.
But everyone knew that was just an excuse. The main reason was to get Kian Keller to agree.
"Should I have someone investigate?"
It was quiet in the hospital room, and Aaron had also overheard what Zero said on the phone.
"No need." Kian Keller came back to his senses, but then added, still worried, "Tell Zero to send more people over."
"To watch Serena Grant?"
Kian Keller stared at him in silence. His gaze was placid and lifeless, yet Aaron could still read the unspoken profanity in it.
Realizing his mistake, he cleared his throat and corrected himself, "Understood. To protect Miss Grant."
"What have the others been up to lately?"
Aaron reported, "Silas Grant is still in Portia. Everything has been normal lately."
"The second son of the Donovan Family was transferred back to a hospital in Jynsia. I hear he’s awake, but he won’t be getting out of the hospital anytime soon. He’s still paralyzed. Yates Donovan must have his hands full."
"Hayes Hughes is working as usual and hasn’t met with Miss Grant. The Sinclair Family’s younger son has also been at home recently. The only exception is that Felix Sinclair."
"Him?" Kian Keller looked up.
At first, he couldn’t tell the two Sinclair sons apart either. It was only after Mia Grant got engaged to one of them that he gradually learned to distinguish between the two.
Felix Sinclair, in particular, left a strong impression.
"Yes. He’s been in contact with Simon Adler recently, and his movements have been very strange. I also found out he changed his major."
Aaron reported his findings, and the man on the hospital bed fell silent for a long time after hearing them.
Aaron was beginning to think he had fallen asleep when, after a long while, he finally heard the man reply, "I hear this Felix Sinclair is a genius."
Aaron agreed. "Looking at his grades, he certainly deserves the title."
"For someone completely devoted to mathematics to suddenly change majors and start studying physics and astronomy..."
Kian Keller couldn’t think of anything other than Mia Grant that could push someone to make what seemed like a decision that went against their own convictions.
Aaron understood his meaning. "But what could that have to do with Miss Grant? As far as I know, Miss Grant is also a math major. She has nothing to do with physics."
"And we’ve never heard that Miss Grant was interested in physics or things like the stars and the moon before."
After all, he had been by Kian Keller’s side for years. From the moment Mia Grant entered Kian Keller’s world, his people had memorized her file completely.
Everything from her birth year to her likes and interests was in there.
"And I remember that a long time ago, Miss Grant’s science grades weren’t very promising."
"Not promising?" Kian Keller looked up.
Aaron said, "The failing kind. She even scored in the single digits in her second year of high school."
"Starting in her third year, her grades skyrocketed. I’m not sure if she got a tutor."
Kian Keller’s eyelashes trembled, and the Buddha Beads between his fingertips stilled. "Go pull all of her grades from middle school to high school. Every single test, big or small, no matter what it is."
Things moved quickly back home. In less than ten minutes, Aaron walked over to the printer, took the compiled report cards from a subordinate, flipped through them briefly, and then brought them back to Kian Keller.
"I just took a quick look. Miss Grant’s early grades are... hard to put into words."
Aaron had wanted to be more tactful, but he found he couldn’t control himself.
"I think if it weren’t for her surname being Grant, with grades like these, forget high school, she wouldn’t have even gotten into a vocational school."
Kian Keller was about to reprimand him, but after seeing the grades, he completely abandoned the thought.
Mia Grant’s early grades from several subjects combined didn’t even add up to two hundred points.
Aaron continued his sharp-tongued commentary, "These scores... Sir, you could get a higher score just by scrawling with your foot."
"..." Kian Keller shot him a sidelong glance, telling him to shut up.
He flipped through the pages. From her first year of middle school to her first year of high school, Mia Grant’s grades were consistently stable.
’Also a rare feat in its own way.’
Starting in her second year of high school, they improved slightly, but not enough to get into a community college.
Just as Aaron had said, starting from the second semester of her third year of high school, Mia Grant’s grades shot up like a rocket.
With the first jump, she went from the bottom of her class to the top fifty in her grade.
The second time, in less than a month, she reached the top twenty.
The third time, she was eighth.
Flipping further, it was second, first, second, first.
After that, she almost always alternated between those two ranks.
Aaron, who was also looking, couldn’t help but remark, "It’s like she became a completely different person."
Kian Keller’s hand, holding the report card, suddenly tightened. "What did you say?"
