Chapter 21 Wolf Cang's Thoughts
Chapter 21 Wolf Cang's Thoughts
The young man looked around but didn't see Lang Cang. As soon as he came out of the cave, he saw Lang Cang leaning against a tree trunk, silently looking at the moon.
Lin Baiyan walked over and patted him on the shoulder.
Lang Cang heard footsteps as Lin Baiyan approached. He turned to look at the young man and asked, "What's wrong?"
Lin Baiyan told Lang Cang about the matter of drying bamboo shoots to make racks.
The man fell silent for a moment. “You don’t need to tell me these things. You are a priest; you can make your own decisions.”
"That won't do. If we're looking for someone from the hunting team, of course we need your knowledge."
Moreover, although no one said it openly, Lin Baiyan knew that the beastmen regarded Lang Cang as their clan leader.
I just don't know what Lang Cang is really thinking...
Lang Cang felt a little helpless looking at the young man's feigned ignorance.
He probably knew what Lin Baiyan was thinking, but he was destined not to stay here forever; his people in the distance were still waiting for him to go and find them.
However, the young man is right; the snow season is just around the corner, and it is indeed not advisable to travel far, especially for young cubs.
Lang Cang's mind started to wander. Judging from today's events, the young man seemed to like the cubs so much. Perhaps in the future... he could temporarily leave Lang Yun and the others here.
"Okay, I'll find a few people for you to go with Hu Jiang."
Lin Baiyan nodded with a bright smile.
Lang Cang changed the subject, "When will you start planting potatoes, the thing you mentioned today?"
Lin Baiyan shook his head. "There's no rush now. The snow season is coming soon. What we need to do now is store enough food."
Lang Cang had indeed thought of this as well. "Tomorrow I will lead the hunting team to a more distant place."
Try to find more prey.
Lin Baiyan wasn't just thinking about food, but also about houses.
There were more than sixty orcs in their group, and they couldn't keep crammed into one cave forever. The sub-orcs were better off, as they could transform into beast forms and didn't take up much space.
The male orcs were generally large in their beast form. Take Lang Cang for example; he was over a meter tall and nearly two meters long in his beast form. When he sat down, he was a huge lump.
"What are you worried about?" Lang Cang asked, noticing the young man's unconsciously furrowed brows.
"I was thinking about where we live," the young man replied instinctively.
“We have more and more stuff in our place now, and it will only get more crowded during the snow season,” Lin Baiyan explained.
Lang Cang shook his head. "There's nothing we can do about it. We don't have enough animal hides to pitch a tent right now."
Lin Baiyan thought it over and over and realized that he had been a bit too hasty. He shook his head and said, "You're right, I was too impatient."
"By the way, I wanted to ask you, where did you find that piece of salt rock that I gave Hu Qing today?"
Let's solve the tribe's most basic problem of salt first. Lin Baiyan looked at Hu Qing's rock today and it won't last much longer.
"I found it by chance when I went out hunting during the migration," Lang Cang recalled. "That place was barren, full of rocks, but there were many such rocks."
Lin Baiyan's eyes lit up. "Do you remember where that place is?"
Lang Cang was probably referring to a salt mine. Most salt mines in saline-alkali lands are orange-red, but the one Lang Cang brought today was a rather ordinary color, looking like a real stone.
"It's too far already. We've been migrating for almost three decades. I found that thing at the very beginning." Lang Cang shook his head, shattering the young man's illusions.
Lin Baiyan was somewhat disappointed, but he was not discouraged. If there was no salt mine, the sea would do!
"Do you know where the sea is?"
"ocean?"
Lin Baiyan nodded hopefully and described the sea to Lang Cang, "It's like a river, but wider, and blue in color."
"The sea you're talking about, is it the kind of sea that's bitter and salty?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Lin Baiyan hadn't expected that Lang Cang had actually seen the sea.
No wonder the Rabbit Forest people all regarded Wolf Cang as their backbone; his mind was practically a living map.
Lang Cang seemed to be thinking, "I have seen this before. If we walk back from where we stopped, it will take about three sunsets to see the sea you mentioned."
Lin Baiyan frowned. "Should we turn back?"
Although he could no longer feel the ground cracking, Lin Baiyan couldn't guarantee that going back would be safe.
Lang Cang nodded. "Yes, the sea you mentioned should be further south."
Now that they have a lead, they will go and check it out no matter how far away it is. This is the fastest way he can think of to find salt.
Whether it will work or not, we'll have to go and see for ourselves. Lin Baiyan made up her mind, "Let's go go and look!"
The young man pulled Lang Cang into the cave. Lang Cang was caught off guard by the beastman's grasp on his hand and was stunned. He simply let the young man lead him into the cave.
Lin Baiyan clapped his hands, and the busy beastmen in the cave stopped what they were doing and looked at Lin Baiyan.
"Everyone, we don't have much salt left in the tribe. Salt is one of the most essential resources for us, so Lang Cang and I have decided to go and find some," Lin Baiyan announced to everyone.
Upon hearing Lin Baiyan say that he and Lang Cang were both going out, the cave became much quieter.
Lin Baiyan was a little confused, looking at everyone's somewhat somber expressions.
Tu Lin put down the wicker basket in his hand, stepped forward, and forced a smile, "Do you really have to go?"
He knew in his heart that without salt, they simply could not survive. Without salt, they would not only be unable to store meat for the winter, but the fighting power of the beastmen would also be greatly reduced.
But... there was a barely perceptible worry in Tu Lin's eyes.
Lu Xiao was also a little lost, and hugged a little bear beside her tightly. "Can't we go and see if there are any tribes around and trade some salt with them?"
The other orcs also looked uneasy. With their chieftain and priest about to leave, they felt as if they had lost their pillar.
The young man nodded. There was nothing he could do about it. Only Lang Cang knew the way to the sea, and only he knew how to extract salt from the seawater.
If the two of them don't go, this salt-hunting trip will probably yield no results.
The cubs sensed the strange atmosphere between the adults and stared at Lin Baiyan with their wet eyes.
Cat Feather, clutching Willow Vine in her arms, looked cautiously at Lin Baiyan, "Priest brother, you and clan leader brother aren't not coming back, are you?"
The cub's words instantly expressed the sentiments of all the beastmen in the cave.
All the beastmen's eyes were fixed on Lang Cang and Lin Baiyan.
The young man finally understood their thought process and looked at the orcs with a mixture of amusement and exasperation. "If I don't go back to the tribe, where else can I go? Don't forget that I am your priest now."
"You are all my people." Lin Baiyan bent down and gently stroked Maoyu's head.
