Chapter 219 Delivered to the Door
Chapter 219 Delivered to the Door
The corpse was unrecognizable, with a dent on its head that appeared to be from a blunt force trauma. It was covered in blood, as if it had suffered extremely cruel torture. The skin was an eerie pale color, and the face had a distorted expression, as if it had experienced immense pain before death.
The body was dressed in a Shawshank Prison uniform, with the prisoner's number printed on the left breast.
"Sheriff, this body is the one that was beaten to death by Captain Haley last night."
"I believe the sheriff should be able to tell the cause of death, right?"
The white sheriff glanced at the body briefly and made his own judgment about the cause of death.
Then he turned to Warden Norton and said, "Warden Norton, didn't you just say Haley was a good guard? Then what's this body? And where is Haley?!"
"This...how is this possible?" Warden Norton feigned disbelief as he rushed forward to examine the body closely. "This was definitely not Haley's doing; someone must have framed him!"
Now that things have come to this, he can only pretend that he knows nothing and try his best to distance himself from the situation.
Li Qing sneered and said, "Framed? Warden, in this prison, who would dare to frame a guard captain? Besides, many inmates in the Fifth District saw Hailey beat a prisoner to death last night. There are witnesses and physical evidence. How could it be false?"
The white sheriff's expression wasn't good either. He said, "Warden Norton, I hope you can cooperate with our investigation. If you have any leads or evidence, you'd better tell us as soon as possible. Also, we hope you can truthfully tell us the whereabouts of Captain Haley, the guard."
Warden Norton gritted his teeth. "I will cooperate with the investigation, but I genuinely don't know Haley's whereabouts. In the meantime, I hope you will refrain from spreading rumors to avoid causing unnecessary panic."
......
The cells in Ward 5 of Shawshank Prison.
Li Qing and Warden Norton, among others, were standing in the open space below the prison.
The prisoners in the cell stood in five rows in front of Li Qing and the others.
Warden Norton stood at the front of the line, his already imposing face now filled with even greater solemnity and seriousness.
“Last night, a serious incident occurred in the Fifth Ward. An inmate died under mysterious circumstances. The state police received a report that Captain Haley, the guard, had murdered the inmate. Now, I want to ask you, who witnessed this incident?” The warden’s voice was deep and powerful, echoing in the ears of every inmate.
However, when questioned by the warden, the group of nearly a hundred prisoners remained surprisingly quiet.
No one dared to speak up. They all knew very well that in this environment, it was better to avoid trouble. It was definitely not a wise move to provoke the warden for the sake of a dead stranger.
These prisoners may be behind bars, but that doesn't mean they're stupid. In this situation, remaining silent is the safest option; no one wants to cause themselves more trouble because of a momentary impulse, especially since they still have a long sentence to serve.
The prisoners exchanged glances, but remained silent. They understood that in this place filled with power and oppression, the slightest disturbance could trigger unpredictable consequences.
At this moment, keeping a low profile and protecting oneself is of utmost importance.
Warden Norton seemed unconcerned by the silence, and even secretly pleased with it.
......
Suddenly, a shout rang out from the crowd, shattering the peaceful atmosphere.
"Haley killed that prisoner! I saw it with my own eyes!" The shout came from the ranks and echoed through the cell.
The sudden voice was like a bombshell dropped into the crowd, causing a huge uproar. The other prisoners turned around in astonishment, and when their eyes fell on the person who had spoken, they couldn't help but gasp. The person who had spoken was none other than Andy, a new prisoner who had just entered the prison yesterday.
The crowd exchanged bewildered glances, a sense of astonishment and bewilderment welling up within them.
"Are you crazy?" someone muttered to themselves.
They couldn't understand why Andy would be so bold as to stand up and identify Haley. Didn't he know how much trouble this might cause him?
More importantly, isn't he afraid of offending Warden Norton because of this?
Li Qing looked at Andy and nodded in satisfaction.
"You really saw it?" the white sheriff asked.
However, Andy seemed unaffected by the reactions of those around him. He straightened up and stared firmly at the white sheriff.
“Yes, Sheriff, I saw it all clearly. After Captain Haley dragged the prisoner out of his cell, he beat him repeatedly with a baton until the prisoner couldn’t move,” Andy said.
Warden Norton's face turned extremely ugly. He glared at Andy, wishing he could devour him alive.
"No matter who did it, we will find out. Now, everyone is back in their cells to await further investigation."
A dozen minutes later, Andy was taken away by state police. The white sheriff said he needed to take Andy back to the station to make a statement, and then he would bring Andy back. The body of the prisoner was also taken away with him.
......
It was 4:30 in the afternoon.
Li Qing left work on time, playing with the jade snake in his hand as he returned to his dormitory. The snake was entirely green and crystal clear, like a fine work of art. Li Qing gently stroked the snake's scales, feeling its cool and smooth texture.
Before even entering the house, Li Qing sensed a murderous intent.
Li Qing used his divine sense to see through the wall and immediately saw Hailey standing at the door.
......
In Li Qing's dormitory, the curtains were drawn tightly, and the room was pitch black.
In the darkness, Haley gripped his baton tightly, pressed his body against the cold wall, and stared ahead, quietly waiting for Li Qing to return to the dormitory.
This despicable Asian man has made him lose face in front of the warden since the first day he arrived here, and even reported him for murder to the state police the very next day!
He cursed inwardly, "Damn Li Qing, who do you think you are?"
He grew angrier the more he thought about it, and gripped the baton in his hand tighter and tighter.
For Haley, killing a criminal was nothing; these criminals were the scum of society, and their lives were worthless.
After Warden Norton gave him a good scolding, he decided to take revenge on Lee Qing!
