Chapter 199 The Light of Vigilance
Chapter 199 The Light of Vigilance
Su Ming said nothing more and turned to leave the office. He knew that no matter what he had been through, no matter how turbulent his heart was, he had to maintain a calm exterior. This was the survival principle he had honed over the years.
On the way back to the dormitory, Su Ming ran into his old friend Li Jianfeng, one of the few people he still trusted. The two had supported each other through countless missions and had already established a deep friendship.
"Su Ming, how is the mission going?" Li Jianfeng came forward as soon as he saw him, with concern glittering in his eyes.
Su Ming smiled slightly, trying to make himself look more relaxed: "It's okay, the mission is completed, and the people are back."
Li Jianfeng looked at him, a hint of worry in his eyes: "You don't look like you're okay. Is there something wrong?"
Su Ming knew Li Jianfeng's keen sense of perception and could always detect subtle fluctuations in his emotions. So, he sighed and said in a low voice, "The atmosphere here has changed. I sense something is amiss."
Li Jianfeng nodded, frowning. "I've noticed it too. The atmosphere within the organization has been a bit strange lately. Many people are starting to become suspicious and wary. It seems like no one trusts each other anymore."
"Yeah." Su Ming whispered, "I even doubt whether I can still work like before after returning from this mission."
The two of them were silent. Only the light at the end of the corridor flickered faintly, adding a touch of eerie atmosphere to the quiet night. Su Ming's heart grew heavier. He realized that this atmosphere of suspicion and hypocrisy had permeated every corner of the organization. The place he once considered home had now become so strange and dangerous.
"Jianfeng, I'm thinking..." Su Ming pondered for a moment, and finally decided to speak his mind, "Perhaps, we should consider taking a step back."
Li Jianfeng was stunned for a moment, then frowned and looked at him: "You mean..."
"Retreat." Su Ming's voice was firm, yet also tinged with a hint of helplessness. "This power struggle has become inevitable, but I don't want to be involved. I'm tired of it."
Li Jianfeng was silent for a moment, clearly considering Su Ming's suggestion. After a few minutes, he took a deep breath and nodded slowly, "Perhaps you are right."
Su Ming felt a slight sense of relief upon seeing Li Jianfeng's reaction. He knew this decision wasn't easy, but they had no choice. Continuing to stay in this organization rife with suspicion and betrayal would only lead them to gradually lose themselves, and perhaps even be swallowed up by it.
"We need to plan carefully," Li Jianfeng whispered, "We can't alert the enemy."
Su Ming nodded. They had to act carefully and not let anyone notice their intentions. Otherwise, the consequences would be disastrous.
In the days that followed, Su Ming and Li Jianfeng tacitly reduced their participation in missions, gradually distancing themselves from the core of power within the organization. Outwardly, they continued to work as normal, but inwardly, they were quietly preparing to leave.
However, even with their utmost caution, they cannot completely avoid risk. Any disturbance within the organization could trigger a greater crisis at any time, especially if their actions begin to attract attention.
"Su Ming, you've been acting a little strange lately." One day, the commander suddenly found Su Ming, with a hint of coldness in his tone.
Su Ming's heart tightened, but he remained calm and composed. "Commander, I just feel a little tired from the recent missions and want to adjust my state a little."
The commander stared at him, his eyes gleaming with inquiry, as if trying to read more information from his expression. Su Ming knew that they must not reveal any flaws at this moment, otherwise their plan would be completely exposed.
"It's good to adjust your status." The commander spoke slowly, his tone still cold, "But I hope you don't forget your responsibilities."
Su Ming nodded, a look of resignation in his eyes: "Of course not, Commander."
The commander looked at him for a moment, then finally turned away and left. Su Ming stood there, secretly relieved, but he also knew that time was running out and their plan had to be implemented quickly.
After several days, Su Ming and Li Jianfeng finally found a suitable opportunity. They chose a routine mission and disappeared quietly into the night after the mission was completed.
The moment Su Ming left the organization, his emotions were extremely complicated. This had been his everything, the place where he had fought and sacrificed. But now, he had to leave and choose to retire. This breakup was painful for him, but it also brought a sense of relief.
The two of them wandered all the way and finally arrived at a remote town, where they could temporarily escape from the disputes of the past and live an ordinary life.
"Are we really leaving like this?" Li Jianfeng stood on the street of the small town, with a trace of confusion in his eyes.
Su Ming stood beside him, smiling slightly, with a hint of relief in his eyes: "Sometimes, leaving is also an option. Perhaps, we can find a new beginning here."
Li Jianfeng was silent for a moment, and finally nodded: "Yes, maybe we really should let go of the past and start a new life."
However, despite their efforts to live an ordinary life, Su Ming could not shake off the lingering shadows in his heart. At night, he often woke up in dreams of past battles, former companions, and the organization full of suspicion and conspiracy.
He knew that even if he chose to retire, the future crisis would not end. Those hidden enemies, those threats that had not disappeared, still awaited him. He knew that this spy war was far from over, it was just continuing in a different way.
One day, Su Ming ran into a stranger at a small town market. The man was dressed in ordinary clothes, but his eyes were sharp, as if he could see through everything.
"Su Ming." The man called out his name in a low voice, with a hint of unquestionable power in his voice.
Su Ming was startled and immediately alert. He knew that this person was no ordinary person, and it was even more impossible for him to have met him by chance.
"Who are you?" Su Ming asked coldly, with a wary look in his eyes.
The man smiled faintly. "You don't need to know who I am. What's important is that I have a proposal that might interest you."
Su Ming remained silent. He knew that this was not an ordinary conversation and there must be more conspiracies and dangers hidden behind it.
"You choose to retire, and that's your right," the man said calmly, a hint of mystery in his tone, "but there are some things you can't avoid just because you want to."
